It is the 185th time a journalist was attacked in the process of the unearthing of a 'story'. Not a number any one from this fraternity or any Indian would be proud of. When J.Dey a senior journalist covering crime, an authority on the mafia during the 'D' days and someone who simply wanted to uncover facts was shot 7 times in broad daylight it not only shook the media but sent a shiver through many spines. Arup Patnaik, Commissioner condemned the attack, saying it was the work of a professional. But is that what we wanted to know? Absolutely not.
They say the press enjoys freedom in India and we are proud of that, but it is such incidents that question the core of journalism in a 'democratic' country like ours.
They say Dey kept people guessing about the route he would take for reaching from A to B, few knew where he stayed, his family was not a topic of discussion, all in all an extremely careful person.
It is sad that someone with such a great work ethic met such a tragic end. Let's hope that not only is this a waking call for authorities but a resounding cry to the journalistic fraternity to continue with the legacy J. Dey left us.
